Stuart Whipps

portrait photo of Stuart Whipps

Stuart Whipps is an artist who often makes work about things he doesn’t understand and doesn’t know how to do. This has included restoring a 1979 Mini with the assistance of former British Leyland workers, training to make geological thin sections at the University of Birmingham, and propagating Begonias at West Dean in Sussex. He works predominantly with photography and video with occasional forays into sculpture and is interested in a broad definition and application of photography and the dialogue between the photographic image and object. He is currently engaged in several long-term research projects, which are being developed as films, exhibitions and books. He is looking at Post-War New Towns of Great Britain and the farcical nature of their gestation and development, The life and work of the poet, patron and sculptor, Edward James and the extraction of rocks and minerals and the legacy of these processes.
